Hanuman Chalisa: when 40 verses change everything
The Chalisa is a 40-verse hymn by Tulsidas, recited daily in millions of households. It is also the single most prescribed remedy for Saturn afflictions. Here is why both are connected.

What it is
The Hanuman Chalisa is a 40-verse devotional hymn (chalisa = "forty") composed by Tulsidas in the 16th century, in Awadhi (a regional north Indian dialect). Tulsidas — who also wrote the Ramcharitmanas — wrote it as a daily-recitable shorter form of devotion for those who couldn't manage the 12,000-verse Ramcharitmanas.
The Chalisa praises Hanuman, the monkey-god of the Ramayana — devotee of Rama, son of Vayu (wind), embodiment of strength, courage, and selfless service.
It takes 7-9 minutes to recite at normal pace. It is, by some accounting, the single most-recited Hindu hymn in daily life globally.
Why Hanuman, why daily
Three classical reasons:
- Hanuman is Saturn's pacifier. In the Ramayana retellings, Hanuman once rescued Saturn from Ravana's prison. Saturn, in gratitude, vowed never to harm Hanuman's devotees with the harshness he gives others. For anyone undergoing Sade Sati, Saturn Mahadasha, or hostile Saturn transit, daily Hanuman Chalisa is the most-prescribed remedy in classical astrology.
- Hanuman is courage personified. When fear arises — fear of failure, fear of confrontation, fear of the unknown — Hanuman's energy is the antidote. Recitation activates the felt sense of courage.
- Tulsidas's genius. The Chalisa is composed in a meter (Chaupai with Doha frame) that is hypnotically easy to memorize and sing. After 40-50 recitations, most people have it by heart. Once memorized, it becomes a portable practice — anywhere, eyes closed, no book needed.
When it works most
The Chalisa works most reliably in these conditions:
- Saturn afflictions — Sade Sati, Shani Mahadasha, Saturn transit over Moon
- Fear-based situations — court cases, examinations, public speaking, confrontations
- Black magic / negative energy — claimed protective effect against malefic sorcery
- Children's nightmares or anxiety — recited at bedtime for/with children
- Tuesdays and Saturdays specifically — these are Hanuman's days, when recitation has amplified effect
- Traveling — recited before journeys, especially difficult ones
How to recite (the right way)
The Chalisa rewards consistency over perfection. Beginners often worry about pronunciation. Don't.
The minimum:
- Sit facing east or north
- Light a small lamp (any lamp; ghee or sesame oil traditional)
- Recite the full 40 verses + opening Doha + closing Doha
- End with "Pavan Tanay Sankat Haran Mangal Murati Roop, Ram Lakhan Sita Sahit Hriday Basahu Sur Bhup" (the closing prayer)
- 7-9 minutes total
For Saturn afflictions specifically: Recite eleven times daily on Tuesdays and Saturdays for 11 consecutive Tuesdays/Saturdays. This is the classical Sankat Mochan protocol.
For ongoing protection: Once daily, ideally morning, sustained for 40 days minimum. After 40 days the practice has structurally established itself.
The text — a few highlight verses
The Chalisa is rich in metaphor. A few that translate well:
Sankat se Hanuman chhudave, mana, krama, vachan, dhyaan jo lave "Hanuman delivers from troubles those who hold him in mind, action, word, and meditation"
Aur devata chitt na dharai, Hanumat sei sarba sukha karai "Even those who don't keep other deities in mind — Hanuman alone gives them all happiness"
Bhoot pisaach nikat nahin aave, mahabir jab naam sunave "Ghosts and demons cannot come near, when one chants the great hero's name"
Sankat te Hanuman chhudave, jo Sumire Hanumat balbeera "Hanuman delivers from troubles those who remember the mighty Hanuman"
The repeated emphasis on deliverance from trouble is what makes this hymn the go-to for difficult periods.
What people report after sustained Chalisa practice
After 40-90 days of daily Chalisa:
- Reduced anxiety in unfamiliar situations
- Easier sleep, fewer disturbing dreams
- A felt sense of "having backup" — the psychological benefit of a daily practice that affirms protection
- For Sade Sati / Saturn-affected individuals — measurable softening of the period's harshness
- Specific intervention reports — the right help arriving at the right time, situations that "should have been worse" not being so
These are subjective reports across millions of practitioners. Treat them as data, not proof.
The science-friendly view
If you don't accept the metaphysical framing:
- Daily 7-minute focused recitation = a daily anchor of attention
- The Awadhi rhythm and meter = a rhythmic activity that engages parasympathetic state
- Memorizing 40 verses = a working memory exercise (cognitive benefit)
- Believing protection while reciting = placebo / expectation effects (which are real and large)
- Adding a daily prayer to a previously unstructured morning = the structure itself helps
Combined, these effects alone explain much of what people report. The Vedic framing simply names what's happening.
Starting tomorrow
If you've never done this, here's the simplest start:
- Find a Hanuman Chalisa text or audio (countless free versions online)
- Tomorrow morning, before doing anything else, recite it once
- Do this for 11 consecutive days (the Hanuman number)
- On day 11, decide: continue or stop
Most people who do 11 consecutive days choose to continue. By 40 days the practice is self-sustaining. By 100 days it's just part of who you are.
This is one of those small daily practices that compound into life-shaping force over years. Tulsidas knew this when he wrote it short enough to be doable forever. Half a millennium of households still doing it suggests he was right.
