The nine planets in Vedic astrology

The Navagraha — "nine planets" — are the classical Vedic celestial bodies: Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Mangal (Mars), Budha (Mercury), Brihaspati (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), Rahu (north lunar node), and Ketu (south lunar node). Each governs specific life domains and each can be strong, neutral, or afflicted in your chart.

When a planet is afflicted (debilitated, combust, in a difficult house, or aspected by malefics), Vedic tradition prescribes specific remedies. Not because the planet is "angry," but because the resonance of that planetary energy in your daily life can be deliberately strengthened through ritual + mantra + practical action.

The remedy formula (same for all 9)

Each planet's Shanti (pacification) follows a four-part structure:

  1. Bija mantra — the seed-sound mantra, chanted in multiples of 108
  2. Gemstone — worn after astrological confirmation, on the prescribed finger and metal
  3. Charity (daan) — items donated on the planet's weekday, to the right recipient
  4. Behavioral practice — daily action that channels the planet's positive expression

Surya (Sun) — Sunday

Bija mantra: "Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah" — 7,000 times for full anushthana, or 108× daily for 40 days.

Gemstone: Ruby (Manik) on the ring finger, set in gold or copper. Wear on Sunday morning after Surya pooja.

Charity: Wheat, jaggery, copper objects, red cloth — donated to elderly father-figures, brahmins, or schoolteachers on Sunday morning.

Behavioral practice: Wake before sunrise. Offer water to the rising sun (Surya Arghya) facing east. 12 Surya Namaskars daily. Honor your father and father-figures.

When to do this: Sun afflicted in the 6/8/12 houses, debilitated in Libra, or combust by close conjunction with Mercury or Venus.

Chandra (Moon) — Monday

Bija mantra: "Om Shram Shreem Shraum Sah Chandraya Namah" — 11,000 for anushthana.

Gemstone: Pearl (Moti) on the little finger, set in silver. Wear on Monday morning.

Charity: Rice, milk, white cloth, silver — donated to mothers, widows, or women's shelters before noon Monday.

Behavioral practice: Visit your mother / a mother figure regularly. Sleep before 10 PM. Drink water from a silver glass. Moonlit walks on full-moon nights.

When: Moon weak (in 6/8/12), debilitated in Scorpio, or under heavy Saturn aspect.

Mangal (Mars) — Tuesday

Bija mantra: "Om Kraam Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah" or "Om Hum Hanumate Rudratmakaya Hum Phat" — 7,000.

Gemstone: Red Coral (Moonga) on the ring finger of right hand, set in gold or copper. Tuesday.

Charity: Red lentils (masoor dal), jaggery, copper, red cloth — donated to soldiers, athletes, or small children on Tuesday.

Behavioral practice: Daily strength training. Hanuman Chalisa morning + evening. Spend time in nature once a week. Channel anger through physical activity.

When: Mangal Dosha, Mars debilitated in Cancer, or Mars in 8th house with malefic aspect.

Budha (Mercury) — Wednesday

Bija mantra: "Om Bram Breem Braum Sah Budhaya Namah" — 17,000.

Gemstone: Emerald (Panna) on the little finger, set in gold or silver. Wednesday.

Charity: Green moong dal, books, stationery, tulsi plants — donated to students, small business owners, or sisters.

Behavioral practice: Read 30 minutes daily. Practice silence one hour each evening. Network deliberately weekly.

When: Mercury combust (within 3° of Sun), debilitated in Pisces, or in 6/8/12.

Brihaspati (Jupiter) — Thursday

Bija mantra: "Om Gram Greem Graum Sah Gurave Namah" — 19,000.

Gemstone: Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj) on the index finger, set in gold. Thursday.

Charity: Yellow moong dal, turmeric, books on dharma, sweets to brahmins. Donate to teachers, scholars, or gurus.

Behavioral practice: Daily meditation 20 minutes. Read scripture or wisdom literature. Apply turmeric tilaka after bathing.

When: Jupiter debilitated in Capricorn, in 6/8/12, or weak by aspect.

Shukra (Venus) — Friday

Bija mantra: "Om Dram Dreem Draum Sah Shukraya Namah" — 16,000.

Gemstone: Diamond (Heera) or White Sapphire on the middle finger, set in platinum or white gold. Friday.

Behavioral practice: Surround yourself with beauty. Maintain a clean, fragrant home. Cultivate your art. Romance regularly.

When: Venus debilitated in Virgo, combust, or in 6/8/12.

Shani (Saturn) — Saturday

Bija mantra: "Om Praam Preem Praum Sah Shanaicharaya Namah" — 23,000.

Gemstone: Blue Sapphire (Neelam) on the middle finger, set in iron or steel. Saturday. WARNING: Wrong Blue Sapphire intensifies Saturn rather than pacifies — only after astrological confirmation and a 3-day trial.

Charity: Black sesame, mustard oil, iron, blankets — to the elderly poor, blind, disabled, or laborers on Saturdays.

Behavioral practice: Wake early daily, no exceptions. Manual labor or service one hour weekly. Honor every elder you meet.

Gemstone: Hessonite Garnet (Gomed) on the middle finger, set in silver.

Charity: Sesame seeds, mustard, lead, blue or smoke-colored cloth, blankets to lepers or marginalized people on Saturday.

Behavioral practice: Avoid intoxicants strictly. Daily meditation is your shield. Embrace foreign / unconventional paths in life.

When: Rahu Mahadasha, Rahu in kendra/trikona houses, or Kaal Sarpa Yoga.

Ketu — Tuesday (8.5× Mars intensity)

Bija mantra: "Om Stram Streem Straum Sah Ketave Namah" — 7,000.

Gemstone: Cat's Eye (Lehsuniya) on the middle finger, set in silver.

Charity: Multi-colored cloth, sesame, blankets to monks, ascetics, or unhoused people. Tuesday.

Behavioral practice: Spiritual practice — meditation, study of philosophy. Trust the field where you mysteriously already know. Don't cling.

When: Ketu Mahadasha, Ketu in 1st/8th house, or natal Sun-Ketu conjunction.

The most important rule

Don't combine remedies for multiple planets simultaneously without astrological guidance. The Navagraha aren't independent forces — strengthening one can imbalance another. Most classical astrologers recommend addressing the single most-afflicted planet for a full 40-day cycle (mandala) before considering the next.

If you're unsure which planet is most-afflicted in your chart, the Vidhata Janm Kundali shows planetary strengths in the Strengths section, and Acharya can recommend a starting point.
